Catholic Care
Catholic Care is a charity that pursues social justice for those who cannot achieve it themselves and seeks to create a better life for anyone in need, regardless of faith or background and even if they have no faith at all. They strive to show how the teachings of Christian love, charity and justice can shape the way we live together.
St. Philip's Catholic Primary works closely with Catholic Care to provide an evironment of support to all members of our school community. They can work closely with children and their familiesa on a variety of different issues such as anger, behaviour in school or at home, bullying, health worries, anxiety, stress, separation and grief. All sessions are conducted in a safe, confidential environment.
Denise Shoan is our brilliant Catholic Care worker who works closely with members of our school community here at St. Philip's.
"Hello, my name is Denise Shone and I currently work one day a week at St Philips. I am employed by Catholic Care and I am based in the Schools, Children and Families Well-being Service. My background is in Social Work and I have been based at St Philips since 2014 where my role is to work with the children, their families and staff by offering therapeutic and practical support.
Catholic Care has many other projects that the schools can access too such as The Young Carers Project, The Gianna Baby Bank Plus, Hypnobirthing, The Community Counselling Service and Mindfulness sessions. If you or your family would like further information on any of these services please discuss with school staff who will put you in contact with me.
The Gianna Baby Bank Plus service is free and confidential. The project supports mothers and fathers who have had a baby and may need practical support with equipment or essential items for the baby. This can mean anything that a newborn baby may need up until the first year of life. These can include clothes nappies, prams, cots as well as many other things. We have a fully stocked building that includes new and nearly new items. We can also support the family as the staff who run the service are trained Social Workers, they can help with sign posting of other services should the family need additional support.
The project has also recently been able to offer a free Hypnobirthing programme. The project has a qualified practitioner leading the programme and can offer 4/5 sessions.
The Young Carers Project was founded due to the growing numbers of young carers we have been supporting. We have senior groups that cater towards high school children and junior groups focusing on primary children. This service is for children who perform caring duties, either to a parent or a sibling who has a health condition, either mental of physical.
During term time the groups meet within the school setting and during school holidays, if possible, we can arrange trips and activities for the young carers, to give them a break from caring for a few hours.
The Community Counselling service is a free and confidential service. The service is run by qualified Counsellors and Trainee counsellors. Each person who receives the service is given 6 sessions free."
